Description
This Johan Rohde (1856-1935) design for Georg Jensen Silversmithy, is a hammered covered sugar bowl with exquisite hand-chased, fluted sides, and a cover with a half-reeded dome with a half-reeded ball finial - all done with exacting detail. The appearance is a stylized abstraction of a flower blossom. This bowl is pattern number 45-C and appears early in the Georg Jensen catalog of sterling silver wares.
The hallmarks are from the beginning period of Jensen's studio, used from 1915 to 1927: "Dessin, JR" (the initials intertwined in a beaded oval); "Denmark, Georg Jensen" (in a beaded oval): "sterling, 45/C". This listing consists of two parts: the bowl and the lid.
This elegant covered bowl is perfect for other things besides sugar. It could hold teabags, trinkets, paper clips on a desk, bonbons, instant coffee packets, or used for display as a perfect example of early Georg Jensen production. It is a demonstration of the transition in style from Art Nouveau to Art Deco, designed by one of Georg Jensen's earliest supporters and mentors. -
