Designers have been consistently inspired by nature in their work during the mid-century era, which makes curvilinear shapes an ongoing font of inspiration. Like in so many other areas, Scandinavian designers excelled in this as well, creating many of the most well-known silhouettes of mid-century lighting design.

Characterized by clean lines, light wood, soft edges and intuitive functionality, Scandinavian modern design is eternally timeless and timely. In the case of this table lamp, it is its surface treatment that makes it stand out so brightly, quite literally. The lampshade is made of brass, the ultimate material for mid-century modern lighting design. The brass beautifully stands out on the shade, and even the wood “lights up” when the lamp is turned on by the switch on the base. In a clever solution, the shade is connected to the thick wooden shaft via a thin brass pole, lifting it off visually and creating more balanced proportions. The wide brass shade directs the light downwards and prevents any glare, while the thin cutouts on the top create an ambient source of light. Scandinavian lighting designers were masters of creating designs with great texture variety as this table lamp shows. The pairing of brass and wood creates an interesting visual effect, where the organic and traditional look of the wood meets the modern look of the metal. The patterned natural pine shaft rests on a robust brass base and lightly widens towards the shade.
