Description
Pair of French gilt and patinated bronze wall lights
French, 20th Century
Height 103cm, width 50cm, depth 44cm
Drawing inspiration from the sophisticated Empire style, these wall lights are a brilliant showcase of artisanship. The stems, crafted from patinated bronze, portray 'terme' figures, offering a nod to an age of classic elegance. These half-length figures, portrayed as ethereal winged angels, are depicted with striking precision, their wings reflecting an essence of lifelike movement and grandeur.
Elevating the design, a thirteen-light ormolu candelabra rests gracefully in the hands of these celestial beings. Meticulously detailed arms, accentuated with palmettes, integrate seamlessly into the surrounding acanthus leaf motifs—a clever design choice that veils the hinge, reminiscent of age-old artistry.
Rich in ornate gilt bronze elements, every candelabra stands out. From its elaborate palmettes to its swirling leaf patterns and ornate backhauling masks on the lower tier of candelabra, the attention to detail is impeccable. The upper tier of candelabra pays homage to Doric columns, bringing an added layer of architectural finesse.
Beyond their masterful craftsmanship, these wall lights have the capability to rejuvenate any space, bestowing it with the Empire style's hallmark magnificence. They shine not only as light sources but as timeless art pieces that whisper tales of historic affluence. -
