  • Description
Very handsome brass table lamp designed by Paavo Tynell in 1949 as a special commission for the Hotel Vaakuna in the famous Sokos building in Helsinki. The stem is adorned with beautifully varnished teak wood, making this lamp extra warm & special. Punctured brass shade, with an adjustable height and tilt. Fantastic golden patina, this is in very good vintage condition and incredibly rare.

    17" H x 5" W

Architected by Erkki Huttunen, the Sokos building faced delays due to the war, pushing the 1940 Olympics and its official opening to 1952. Upon its completion, Vaakuna stood as the Nordic countries' largest hotel, hosting Olympic attendees and global press. Huttunen not only crafted the architecture but also oversaw furniture and intricate interior details. Runar Engblom also lent his touch to furniture design, while lighting maestro Paavo Tynell enjoyed complete creative freedom in illuminating the space.

Paavo Tynell (1890-1973) was an industrial designer, known as the great pioneer of Finnish lighting design, known as “the man who illuminated Finland”. A master craftsman himself, Tynell’s designs were derivative of a traditional aesthetic with a modern sensibility. Marked by delicacy and softness, his most famous forms echo the structures of nature & are some of the most sought-after lights in today's market.
