Description
This very rare armchair was designed by Koene Oberman and produced by Meubelindustrie Gelderland BV in Culemborg, Netherlands in the 1950s. Koene Oberman was not only the founder of the Dutch manufacturer Gelderland but also designed many of the company's early models.
The lacquered iron base of this chair with its distinct grashopper inspired legs was also used by Oberman for an armless lounge chair version, as well as a version with wooden armrests. This particular chair is the first one we've come across with a fully upholstered shell, with generously sized armrests. The upholstered shell is placed at an angle on the base, creating a striking and dynamic silhouette. The playful, geometric lines of the design make this an excellent example of Dutch Mid-Century Modern design at its best.
The chair is in overall very good condition. It has been upholstered in a two-tone gray wool fabric, with the loose back and seat cushion in a slightly darker tone of gray. The fabric is in good condition. The iron base with minor wear and patina consistent with age and use. -
