French 18th Century Louis XVI Gilt & Painted Mirror
-
Description
Dimensions: 29 ⅞” H x 18 ½” W x 3” D
A French giltwood mirror in the Louis XVI style, circa 1790, with incredible, carved motifs set off by the deep green painted backpanel. Flowing from the top of the piece, ribbons cascade down to the upper edges of the frame around two cornucopia flanking the cartouche in the middle, suggesting abundance even in small proportions. The original mirror plate is surrounded by a low, dentil molding and finished at the lower corners by ornate carvings, which transition into little ebonized feet to lift and protect the delicate work.
