French 18th Century Louis XVI Commode
-
Description
Dimensions: 35 ¼” H x 40 ¼” W x 22 ½” D
An exceptional Louis XVI period, marble-topped mahogany commode from France that brings regal refinement to any interior. Brass trim with pierced gallery on three sides encloses the (inset) Saint Anne marble top; the stone exhibits a dense accumulation of minerals in spots of gray-scale that fortunately blend the expected surface scratches and a professionally repaired break at the back right corner. See the detailed images for more information. Below turreted front corners are repoussé brass panels–like epaulettes–marking the upper third of the front legs with fluted carvings to emphasize the linear qualities of this handsome case piece. Each of the three drawers are embellished with polished brass trim around the paneling and unusually restrained escutcheons, however no key is present to secure the locks. This piece would make a striking dresser for clothing as well as household linens: all three drawers glide easily using angular brass bail handles. Trumpet feet with brass appliques around the top elevate the piece from the floor. Please view the detailed images to see the condition of the marble, and the middle-right drawer pull is a very good replacement. Cleaned, tightened, and polished with a French paste wax this antique commode is ready for your interior. -
