Period Gustavian Side Chair by John Hammarström, Stockholm (1794–1812)
-
Description
This exceptional period Gustavian chair, crafted in Stockholm between 1794 and 1812 by renowned maker John Hammarström, is a superb example of Swedish neoclassical design at its finest. Expertly carved from pine and scraped back to its original historic paint surface, the chair retains the soft, timeworn patina that embodies Gustavian restraint and elegance. The refined silhouette features a squared back with delicately turned spindle supports and finely detailed carvings along the apron and tapered legs. Newly upholstered in natural linen, the seat and backrest provide a fresh, timeless contrast to the antique frame while preserving its authenticity. Balanced, architectural, and understated, this chair reflects the influence of French neoclassicism on late 18th-century Swedish design. Both a collectible piece of craftsmanship and a versatile accent for sophisticated interiors, it captures the harmony, lightness, and poetic simplicity that define the Gustavian aesthetic.
