This painting by Henri Duvieux (French, 1855–1920) portrays the Hagia Sophia illuminated by the gentle light of morning, its great dome rising above Istanbul’s skyline as figures gather before the city’s ancient walls. Duvieux, a Paris-born Orientalist painter, was renowned for his luminous cityscapes and sensitivity to colour and atmosphere. Exhibiting at the Paris Salon from 1878 to 1905, he developed a distinctive style that fused meticulous detail to architecture with a romantic sensitivity to light. His travels through the Levant—and his enduring fascination with Istanbul, then still known to many as Constantinople—provided him with the subjects that would later populate his paintings.

In this work, the vast silhouette of the Hagia Sophia—Istanbul’s most famous mosque—emerges through the morning haze, the sunlight catching the domes and the ochre tones of the surrounding buildings. Below, small groups of figures pause in reverence and conversation, their presence lending warmth and human rhythm to the monumental scene. Thanks to Duvieux’s subtle gradations of tone and harmonious composition, the image feels both contemplative and alive, transforming a city view into a study of a time, a place, and its people.

Presented in a finely carved giltwood frame with a linen slip, the painting retains its period character.

Thanks to its harmonious composition, brilliant depiction of light and atmosphere, and contemplative subject, this work exemplifies Duvieux’s finest artistic qualities. It would, therefore, make an outstanding addition to any growing collection of 19th century or Orientalist art.
