French 19th Century Oak & Beech Artisan’s Workbench

A French 19th century artisan’s workbench from circa 1880, made of thick beech planks for durability that continues over a century later as a fascinating antique relic of industrial innovation. The single top plank is a formidable 3 ½” thick, that exhibits amazing textures by the repetition of saw blades and hand tools necessary to the carpenter’s craft. This example has also been personalized with the initials “MD” on the right side. Four roughly hewn legs mounted support the top and a trough-like lower shelf (12 ¾” D), a potentially useful feature should one want to repurpose this piece as a console table for an entryway. A vise grip installed on the front left leg turns by a heavy iron rod. The awe-inspiring workbench appeals to a wide range of design tastes, from brutalism to industrial to primitive for its charming imperfections. Cleaned and polished with a French paste wax, ready for your interior. We believe this to be in good antique condition considering its age, and any visible signs of wear are captured in the photos.
