Lc1 Armchair by Le Corbusier, Jeanneret & Perriand for Cassina

LC1 “Fauteuil à dossier basculant” armchair designed by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, and Charlotte Perriand in 1928 and manufactured in Italy by Cassina.

The chair consists of a tubular chrome-plated steel frame with black leather seat, backrest, and arm straps. The backrest is suspended from the frame and pivots to accommodate the seated position. Metal springs span the reverse of the leather backrest. The tubular frame incorporates continuous front and rear legs, horizontal structural members, and leather-wrapped armrests.

The LC1 was designed in 1928 and presented publicly at the 1929 Salon d’Automne in Paris as part of a group of furniture developed by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, and Charlotte Perriand. The design was developed through the designers’ study of human posture and combines a rigid tubular-steel structure with flexible leather seating components. Cassina introduced the model into production in 1965 as part of its collection of licensed modernist designs.

This example bears engraved manufacturer and attribution markings to the chrome frame, including Cassina, the designers’ identifying mark, the Le Corbusier signature, and individual production numbers N° 41755 & 41757, as visible in the photographs.

Designers: Le Corbusier (1887–1965), Pierre Jeanneret (1896–1967), and Charlotte Perriand (1903–1999) collaborated on furniture beginning in the late 1920s. Le Corbusier and Jeanneret had established their architectural partnership in Paris in 1922; Perriand joined their rue de Sèvres atelier in 1927. Their collaboration, which continued through 1937, produced a series of tubular-steel furniture designs addressing seating, posture, and standardized production, including the LC1 armchair.

Manufacturer: Cassina was established in Meda, Italy, in 1927 and became an important manufacturer of postwar Italian furniture. In 1965, the company began production of furniture by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, and Charlotte Perriand, including the LC1, as part of what became its I Maestri collection. Cassina continues to manufacture the design today.
