Vico Magistretti Vicario Set of 2 Lounge Chairs for Artemide, 1970

A fantastic pair of Artemide "Vicario" Lounge Chairs which are an impressive example of progressive Italian design from the early 1970s. Made from glass-reinforced polyester (GRP), the Vicario is characterized by its sculptural, almost fluid form. Seat, backrest, armrests, and legs seamlessly blend into each other, forming an expressive unit. The widely cantilevered armrests, the curved seat shell, and the sturdy legs give the armchair its distinctive futuristic appearance.

The set offered is in very good vintage condition. The red surfaces have retained their intense hue and beautiful luster. There are only minimal signs of age and use in the plastic. The intense red high-gloss surface emphasizes the organic design and gives the armchairs fascinating reflections depending on the incidence of light.

The Vicario combines high recognition value with the characteristic aesthetic of Italian Space Age design. Its design historical significance is also demonstrated by the fact that a Vicario from 1971 is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
