Description
Four extraordinary Italian design classics, whose sculptural form and sophisticated material combinations impressively reflect the experimental spirit of 1970s furniture design. The Pan Am chairs, attributed to Gastone Rinaldi for RIMA, combine a delicate, chrome-plated steel structure with generously upholstered seat shells in smooth black leather. The result is an expressive ensemble that uniquely unites lightness, elegance, and high seating comfort.
The set of 4 offered here is in excellent vintage condition. The smooth black leather is superbly preserved and supple. The natural creasing highlights the inviting character of the deep, shell-shaped upholstery. The chrome-plated steel frames have a beautiful luster and show only minimal, age-related signs of wear.
Particularly characteristic is the chairs' exceptional construction. The generous, softly upholstered seat shells rest within an open, basket-like structure of curved chrome rods. These follow the organic silhouette of the upholstery and lend the chairs their unmistakable appearance.
The name "Pan Am" is attributed to the characteristic arrangement of the curved chrome rods on the back of the seat shells. Their arched lines recall the stylized wing motif in the historic logo of the legendary American airline, Pan American World Airways. This design parallel is associated with the model name used today and underscores the futuristic design language of 1970s Italian design.
The elegantly curved bases pick up on the lines of the seat shells and, despite their delicate appearance, ensure a stable stance. Another striking detail is the rectangular metal elements inside the backrests, which create an exciting contrast to the soft black leather.
Thanks to their generous seat area and wrap-around upholstery, the Pan Am chairs offer exceptionally pleasant seating comfort. As a cohesive set of 4, they are perfectly suited for sophisticated dining areas, representative lounges, galleries, or exclusive hospitality interiors.
Gastone Rinaldi (1920–2006) is considered one of the significant Italian furniture designers of post-war modernism. His designs are characterized by innovative metal constructions, a distinct spirit of experimentation, and the harmonious interplay of technical precision with organic forms.
Rinaldi was closely associated with the Italian furniture manufacturer RIMA (Rinaldi Mario), the family business whose design development he significantly shaped. Particularly between the 1950s and 1970s, exceptional seating furniture was created that gained international attention through its lightweight steel constructions and unmistakable design language.
His work is exemplary of an era in which Italian furniture design increasingly dissolved the boundaries between functional utility and sculptural design object. -
