Description
The Hunting Chair with matching ottoman is an exceptional example of East German furniture design from the 1960s. Its striking oak construction, deeply reclined seating position and characteristic rope upholstery give the lounge chair a distinctive, almost sculptural silhouette. Together with the ottoman, it forms an expressive ensemble in the Mid-Century Modern style.
The armchair and the accompanying ottoman are in excellent condition. The solid wood frames are superbly preserved and display a beautiful natural grain. All seat and back cushions have been reupholstered with a high-quality, dark anthracite felt fabric. The new upholstery provides an elegant contrast to the warm oak and highlights the clear design language of the piece.
The highly sophisticated craftsmanship is particularly noteworthy. The boldly splayed legs, open backrest and visible wooden joints with round wooden dowels define its appearance. The rope upholstery, guided by the wooden frame, serves as the internal support for the cushions and combines traditional furniture-making with functional design. The angled seat and matching ottoman allow for an exceptionally relaxed seating position.
The Hunting Chair was created in the 1960s by the PGH Erzgebirgisches Kunsthandwerk in Annaberg-Buchholz, a craft production cooperative in the former GDR. German wood sculptor Heinz Heger was involved in the development of this exceptional original design. His design influence is particularly associated with the sculptural execution of the solid wood construction. The visible construction, the deliberate use of natural materials and the precision of the craftsmanship continue to give the design a distinctive character to this day.
With its expressive architecture and the combination of warm oak and dark felt cushions, this ensemble is ideal as a statement piece in sophisticated living spaces, libraries or stylish lounge areas. The ottoman complements the armchair both functionally and aesthetically.
A rare and distinctive original ensemble from the 1960s, which uniquely combines Erzgebirge craftsmanship, independent GDR design and timeless modernity. -
