Description
This exceptional ensemble of two Hunting Chairs with matching ottomans is one of the most striking examples of GDR furniture design. Designed by Heinz Heger, these lounge chairs combine an expressive wooden structure with a distinctly low, relaxed seating position. Their widely splayed legs, reclined backrests, and characteristic rope tensioning give the furniture an unmistakable silhouette. As a fully preserved ensemble of two chairs and two ottomans, the design achieves its distinctive visual impact.
All four pieces of furniture are in excellent condition. The wooden frames are excellently preserved and show a beautiful, age-appropriate patina. All seat and back cushions of the chairs, as well as the cushions of the two ottomans, have been professionally reupholstered and covered in high-quality black felt fabric. The new upholstery provides excellent seating comfort and creates an elegant contrast to the warm wood tone of the frames.
The design is characterized by its unusually open construction. The solid, carefully shaped wooden frames, with their diagonally splayed legs and deeply reclined backrests, create a dynamic, almost architectural structure. Particularly characteristic are the visible rope tensioning elements, which serve as load-bearing supports for the seat surfaces. The backrests, with their horizontal wooden slats, emphasize the design's structural character. The two matching ottomans echo the design language of the chairs, completing the comfortable lounge ensemble.
The Hunting Chair was designed by Heinz Heger, a designer whose work is known for its distinctive, functionally oriented design language within GDR furniture design. His Hunting Chair combines craftsmanship with a remarkably modern, international design aesthetic. The low seat height, generously reclined backrest, and use of natural materials are reminiscent of the experimental seating designs of international mid-century modernism, without losing their own distinctive design identity.
The design was manufactured by PGH Annaberg, a craft production cooperative from the Ore Mountains. The craft-oriented furniture production of the GDR produced not only functional everyday furniture but also distinctive designs that are increasingly attracting the attention of collectors and enthusiasts of historic design furniture.
Today, the Hunting Chair can be regarded as an icon of GDR design. Its sculptural construction, visible craftsmanship, and combination of functionality and design ambition make it a special collector's item. -
