19th-century French folk art chair constructed in wood and distinguished by the remains of a heavily worn blue-painted finish. Its straightforward vernacular construction consists of a plank seat, tall open back and stretcher-connected legs, assembled with the direct, functional character associated with traditional rural furniture. Layers of wear, exposed timber and traces of earlier surface treatments have accumulated naturally through prolonged use.

The irregularities of the construction and deeply aged surface give the chair a distinct wabi-sabi character, where wear, repair and imperfection form an integral part of the object. Rather than obscuring its history, the surviving paint, abrasions and variations in the timber preserve a particularly expressive record of age and use. As with all our rustic furniture, the chair has undergone a two-cycle preventive woodworm treatment for long-term care.
