Rustic Vernacular Wooden Chair, France, 19th Century

This 19th-century French wooden chair belongs to the tradition of vernacular furniture, where straightforward construction and locally available materials took precedence over formal decoration. The tall open back, plank seat and stretcher-supported frame give the chair an uncomplicated, utilitarian character. Subtle irregularities in the construction and hand-worked elements contribute to its individual presence.

Its surface has developed considerable character through age and use, with worn areas, scratches, old markings, tonal variation and remnants of earlier finishes visible throughout the wood. A metal reinforcement to one of the lower joints documents a historic repair rather than concealing it, adding another layer to the chair's material history. These accumulated imperfections give the piece a natural affinity with the principles associated with wabi-sabi, where wear, irregularity and the passage of time are valued as part of an object's character.
