Description
A Louis XVI period barometer and thermometer, French, 18th century, in carved wood painted verdigris green and parcel gilt, the engraved dial marked for Viard and Blanchard, opticians at Troyes. The banjo form rises through a lattice-carved throat to a shaped crest, the original dial ringed with the poetic weather promises of the period, from Tempete to Beau Fixe. No longer in working order, it is offered as the sculptural object these instruments have become: a slender vertical accent for a hallway, study, or the pier between windows, carrying its maker's name and two centuries of Gallic charm. Minor chips and losses as expected, with wear consistent with age.
