Description
This exceptional set of four stackable wooden chairs combines a striking, architectural design language with a thoughtful and functional construction. The widely splayed, A-shaped wooden legs, the slightly curved backrests, and the warm wood tones give the chairs a distinctive character. An expressive example of functionalist furniture design that combines the design principles of the Bauhaus with the clear aesthetics of postwar modernism.
The unusual construction of the chair frames is particularly characteristic. The splayed legs are joined by triangular wooden connectors on the sides and fastened with visible metal screws. These structural elements are not only functional but also define the chairs' striking silhouette.
The slightly reclined backrests are made of molded plywood and feature a small, horizontally arranged handle cutout at the bottom. This characteristic detail makes it easier to lift and move the chairs and underscores their functional design approach. The generous wooden seats with gently rounded edges provide a charming contrast to the geometric design of the bases.
Another special feature is the thoughtful stacking construction. All four chairs can be stacked together in a space-saving and nearly flush manner. In the process, the splayed wooden frames interlock precisely without losing the individual form of the chairs.
The entire set is in excellent vintage condition. The wood surfaces show a beautiful patina that has developed over decades and only minor signs of wear consistent with age. The warm, honey-colored wood tone and the vibrant grain are superbly preserved. Only one of the four chairs has a small flaw on the back of the backrest. Overall, the set is in an exceptionally well-maintained and authentic state of preservation.
Stylistically, the design of the chairs can be attributed to German functionalism and early postwar modernism. In particular, the visible construction, the consistent omission of decorative elements, and the combination of form and function are reminiscent of Bauhaus design principles. -
