Description
This is an original mid-century abstract expressionist work in gouache and pastel on paper titled "Burnt Head" by the prominent American artist Morris Shulman The piece features a distinct, textured blend of early Post-WWII abstraction and landscape, characterized by bold blocks of yellow, blue, and earthy tones. This composition is part of Shulman's highly celebrated body of work inspired by Monhegan Island, Maine, where he routinely spent his summers capturing the rugged coastal topography and natural formations. Housed in a black frame behind glass with neutral linen liner, circa 1940-1949.
Morris Shulman (1912–1978) was an American abstract expressionist painter known for his colorful, dynamic compositions that often featured geometric forms and energetic brushwork. Born in Savannah, Georgia in 1912, he studied at the National Academy of Design and the Hans Hofmann School of Art in New York City. His work has been exhibited widely in museums and galleries, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, National Museum of American Art at the Smithsonian, the Carnegie Institute Museum, and the Brooklyn Museum. -
