Jorge Zalszupin
Brazilian, 1922
Jorge Zalszupin (1922–2020) was a Polish-born Brazilian architect and designer celebrated for his sophisticated contributions to modern and mid-century furniture design. After emigrating to Brazil following World War II, he established the furniture manufacturing company L’Atelier in São Paulo during the 1950s, where he created innovative, handcrafted pieces that defined Brazilian modernism.
Zalszupin’s work blended European precision with the warmth and natural beauty of Brazilian materials such as jacaranda and rosewood. His refined aesthetic and masterful craftsmanship caught the attention of renowned architect Oscar Niemeyer, who included Zalszupin’s one-of-a-kind furniture designs in the Palácio da Alvorada and Palácio do Planalto—two of Brazil’s most iconic modernist landmarks.
A key figure in the Novo Rumo design collective, Zalszupin helped shape Brazil’s postwar design identity and elevate its international reputation. His furniture, characterized by sculptural lines, organic forms, and timeless elegance, remains highly sought after by collectors and design enthusiasts around the world.
