Philippe Starck
French, 1949
Philippe Starck was born in 1949 in Paris France. He studied at École Nissim de Camondo, Paris and started his own firm Starck, in 1968-which produced inflatable objects. In the 1970s, Starck made a name for himself design for Paris nightclubs La Main Bleue (1976) and Les Bains-Douches (1978). Starck’s international reputation grew with the commission to refurbish the private apartments of French President Francois Mitterrand. Starck is known for not developing a distinct aesthetic or a materials preference and many of Starck’s designs were often sold as affordable and to a mass market. Starck's Ghost Chair for Kartell has reinvigorated his older work for a new generation. Vintage Philippe Starck Furniture Chairs remain popular worldwide.
