Presented is a first edition of Following the Equator: A Journey Around the World by Mark Twain. The book was first published by The American Publishing Company in 1897, and like many of Twain's novels, was sold by subscription. This original edition includes numerous illustrations by eleven prominent illustrators of that period, including Daniel Carter Beard, Frederick Dielman, Thomas Fogarty and Albert Grantley Reinhart, many of whom had previously worked with Twain. The book has been expertly rebound with the publisher's blue cloth laid down, color pictorial cover label with gilt accents, spine decorated and lettered in gilt, renewed endpapers, and a custom 1/4 tan leather and cloth clamshell case.
Following the Equatoris a non-fiction travelogue, chronicling Twain’s journey to Fiji, New Zealand, Australia, India, and South Africa. Twain wrote the book during his lecture tour of the British Empire, between 1895 and 1896. It combines vivid descriptions of the landscapes and cultures he encountered and is peppered with anecdotes, satire, and Twain’s reflections on colonialism and human nature. “The one thing you can always say about Twain is that he is no ordinary tourist. His picture of the odd customs of the British Indian empire - both native and colonial - are seemingly endless but always fascinating” (Rubin, 2010).
