Grand Tour Souvenir Bronze Figure of "Discobolus" After the Antique by Myron
-
Description
This large 19th century table-top Grand Tour Souvenir bronze figure of the "Discobolus", after the original by the Ancient Greek artist Myron, was cast and patinated in Italy for the grand tour trade. The brownish gold patina is particularly attractive and stands out from the normal black patina. This patination is scarce. The square base is a striated marble plinth, with minor chips from household wear. The figure depicts a Greek Olympic athlete beginning to throw a discus in an ancient Olympic competition. This type of souvenir statue was popular for the 18th and 19th century traveling tourist making the grand summer tour among the historic sites and museums of Europe, especially in Italy. Today, such figures are terrific accent pieces for any decorating style, or for adding to a collection of the Grand Tour Souvenir afficionado.
