Description
This expressive bronze sculpture depicts Napoleon Bonaparte in his characteristic commander's pose. Featuring the famous bicorne hat, the long, flowing officer's coat, and his hand tucked against his chest, the figure embodies one of the most well-known personalities in European history. The dark-patinated bronze rests on an elegant, round base made of black marble. Particularly noteworthy is the signature "Gladenbeck," which refers to the traditional Berlin art foundry.
The standing figure is impressive in its sculptural execution and characteristic portrayal of Napoleon. While the left hand is held in the typical posture against the chest, the right hand holds a short object that resembles a baton. The carefully modeled facial features, the distinctive headgear, and the coat falling in soft folds give the sculpture a lively yet representative appearance. The dark brown bronze patina shows subtle, warm highlights and emphasizes the three-dimensional effect of the figure.
The condition is first-class. The bronze presents itself with a beautiful, uniform patina and only minor surface marks consistent with its age. The black marble base is also in a very well-kept condition.
The Berlin foundry Gladenbeck is considered one of the significant German art foundries of the 19th and early 20th centuries. The company was founded in 1851 by Hermann Gladenbeck. The foundry achieved international recognition, particularly for its high-quality bronze casts based on designs by renowned sculptors. Its work included monumental monuments, portrait busts, figurative sculptures, and decorative small bronzes. The exceptional craftsmanship made the name Gladenbeck known far beyond Berlin. Today, historical works from the foundry are represented in museums, public collections, and the international art trade.
The Napoleon sculpture offered here bears the signature "Gladenbeck" on the round bronze plinth. The black marble base creates an elegant contrast to the warm, dark brown patina and gives the figure a representative character. -
