Swedish 18th Century Painted Chest-Trunk

An 18th century painted chest from Sweden, likely a marriage trunk, displaying a particular Scandinavian folk art style of joyful polychrome illustrations. The large, rectilinear volume is enlivened by Gustavian-red paint saturating the case and artistic painting techniques that fills the front paneling as floral and abstract designs. A pair of octagonal panels on the front side depict garden urns overflowing in tightly composed floral arrangements. Heavy, forged iron hardware of working lock and hinges both inside and out are equally as expressive as the painted decoration, which includes the large carrying handles to the sides. The key and locking system is a double loaded spring lock. The interior is fitted with the traditional candle box on the left, and an unusual shelf with cubbies and drawers that spans the full width. On the inside of the lid, this trunk is watched over by a pasted sticker of St. Bruno, the founder of the Carthusian order. The trunk has been gently cleaned and polished to preserve every unique feature, ready for its next home. We believe this item to be in good antique condition considering its age, and any visible signs of wear are captured in the photos.
