Description
This exceptional Aubusson tapestry, Automne by Sonia Delaunay, represents one of the most refined textile translations of her Simultanist vision. Hand-woven circa 1970 by the renowned Pinton Frères workshop, the piece captures Delaunay’s lifelong exploration of color, rhythm, and geometric abstraction. In Automne, overlapping arcs and vibrant chromatic contrasts create a sense of movement that feels almost musical—a direct expression of her“ simultaneous contrasts of color” theory, developed to give color its own pulse and spatial presence. The tapestry stands firmly within the lineage of Delaunay’s interdisciplinary practice, extending the ideas that shaped her early patchwork constructions, her textile designs, and her groundbreaking role at the intersection of fine art and applied arts. This example is particularly distinguished as an artist’s proof, signed by both the artist and the master weaver, aligning it with other editions of Automne that have appeared in major museums and international auction houses. As a woven work, it offers the depth and luminosity that Delaunay sought throughout her career—an enduring embodiment of her belief that color in motion can transform a space.
