Los Castillo Taxco Azurite & Lapis Inlaid Silver Plated Tray, Mexican Modernist

$ 1,650
  • Description
    A striking example of mid-century Mexican modernist silverwork, this vintage serving tray was designed and manufactured by Los Castillo in Taxco, Mexico, during the 1950s. Crafted from solid brass with a rich silver-plated finish, the tray is distinguished by its beautifully hand-inlaid border of Azurite and Lapis Lazuli, creating a dramatic interplay of deep blue, green, and earthy mineral tones that perfectly complement the reflective silver surface.

    The underside retains the original Los Castillo hallmark reading "Los Castillo, Taxco, TA-01, Hecho en Mexico, Plateado, No. 106," confirming its authenticity and period manufacture.

    Founded by Antonio Castillo, one of the legendary Castillo brothers, Los Castillo emerged as one of Taxco's most celebrated workshops following Antonio's early years working alongside William Spratling, widely regarded as the father of the modern Mexican silver renaissance. Together with contemporaries such as Hector Aguilar, Margot de Taxco, Antonio Pineda, and Matilde Poulat, Los Castillo helped define the international reputation of Mexican silver during the mid-20th century. Their workshop became renowned for combining exceptional craftsmanship with modernist design, often incorporating natural materials including gemstones, wood, and mixed metals into sculptural functional objects.

    This tray exemplifies that philosophy, balancing clean modernist lines with richly textured mineral inlay. The understated rectangular form allows the vivid stone mosaic to become the focal point, making the piece equally suitable as a serving tray, bar accessory, desk organizer, or decorative tabletop object.

    Today, Los Castillo pieces remain highly sought after by collectors of Taxco silver, Mexican modernism, and mid-century decorative arts. This tray is particularly appealing to interior designers seeking authentic vintage accessories that introduce warmth, craftsmanship, and refined color into both contemporary and traditional interiors.
