signature and seal on bottom left read: Tessai Gaishi Writing in top right corner is illegible. Includes original box. Outside of box reads: Tenchi keiheki Chikushi Noko ji shu koku (heaven and earth opening again, Emperor's assistant can show old roads of the country) Inside of box: Now god's hand, roads and islands in the islands of Japan. Taisho 5 (1916), Tessai. About the artist: Tessai was a Nan ga artist from Kyoto. He had other names like Tetsuto, Tetsuro, Tetsushi etc. He became a court artist, also was a member of Teikoku Bijutsu-in. He, as a child, studied national literature and old chinese. He started drawing at the age of 18. He became an official for shrines after Meiji restoration etc. Painting dimentions: 52"h. x 20"w.
