Information from the artist Nathan Benn:
I took this photograph on assignment for National Geographic Magazine in 1981 for a state story on Florida. The event was Bal des Arts, an annual costume gala at the Breakers Hotel in Palm Beach, Florida. The charity gala raises money for the Norton Art Gallery. I lived in Palm Beach during my last year in college, 1971-1972. So, I had some familiarity with the Breakers Hotel and the over-the-top costume balls during “the season.”
Though not published in the National Geographic Magazine in that story, it was featured as a double page in the 1988 publication, “Odyssey: The Art of Photography at National Geographic,” with text by Jane Livingston, curator of the Corcoran Art Gallery. The image was included in the Odyssey exhibition at the Corcoran and traveled to numerous other museums.

Prints of the image are in the permanent collection of the Ringling Museum of Art, George Eastman Museum, Peabody Essex Museum, and HistoryMiami. -
