Description
Extremely fine and rare Herter Brothers ebonized hall chair, with the typical Herter stamped number "3812" and a pencil inscription of the client's name "Kellogg". The Kellogg name is intriguing. The Mark Hopkins house in San Francisco was one of the great Herter commissions (completed in 1878) and Kellogg was a family name of Mrs. Mark Hopkins. This chair was found in San Francisco. Mrs. Mark Hopkins went on to marry her Herter Bros. decorator. This chair is related stylistically to a labelled Herter tall case clock sold at auction with pendant wooden rings as well as a great ebonized Aesthetic Movement center table with pendant brass rings in the collection of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.
