1990s Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni Taccia Lamp for Flos

Designed in 1962 by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni and manufactured by Flos in Italy, the Taccia table lamp is a landmark of twentieth-century industrial modernism. This 1990s vintage specimen is authenticated by its original Flos Inc. North American distribution labels, which remain intact underneath the base rim. Operating at the intersection of avant-garde design and rationalist utility, the Taccia subverts conventional expectations by functioning conceptually as an upside-down hanging luminary.

The history of the Taccia is rooted in the Castiglioni brothers' obsession with rationalist problem-solving and industrial readymades. Conceived as early as 1958, the design was forged during a period of intensive collaboration that began immediately after World War II, when the brothers focused their architectural practices on exploring shapes, techniques, and new materials to develop an integrated design process. The initial prototypes utilized a plastic bowl diffuser; however, the extreme heat from early incandescent bulbs caused the plastic to deform and melt, forcing the designers to switch to mouth-blown glass when Flos began commercial production in 1962. To solve the thermal dilemma, they modeled the heavy, extruded aluminum base directly after an industrial radiator heat sink. This structural choice became a lasting symbol of mid-century Italian luxury, solidifying the brothers' international reputation. As co-founders of the ADI (Association of Industrial Design) in 1956 and celebrated professors of Architecture and Industrial Design in Milan and Turin, the Castiglionis amassed an unparalleled legacy, earning multiple Compasso d’Oro awards and Gran Premi of the Milan Triennale.

This large-scale model retains its original mouth-blown glass bowl diffuser, which balances unattached and fully adjustable atop the base. The cylindrical column is crafted from black anodized extruded aluminum, engineered after an industrial radiator to optimize heat dissipation. The column retains its robust, period-correct internal porcelain screw-in socket assembly, which has been fitted with a modern PAR30 LED retrofit bulb featuring an integrated multi-diode lens and a finned aluminum cooling ring. This configuration marries vintage authenticity with contemporary utility, providing a stable, glare-free ambient glow while generating virtually zero thermal output—safeguarding the mouth-blown glass diffuser from the heat stress common to historic incandescent bulbs. Light is cast upward from the base and intercepted by a concave, spun aluminum reflector disc—finished in gloss white on the interior and matte white on the exterior—to cleanly diffuse illumination.
