Description
This rare table lamp, produced by Boréns in Sweden and attributed to an unknown designer, is a fine example of Swedish mid-century lighting that emphasizes material richness and understated elegance. With its disciplined geometry and thoughtful detailing, the lamp balances functional lighting with sculptural presence.
The form centers around a broad, domed brass shade measuring 35.5 cm in diameter. The shade has a clean, shallow curve that subtly flares outward, directing light downward in a soft, ambient glow. The brass surface is gently aged, exhibiting a subdued patina that softens its original polish into a warm, golden hue. This natural oxidation enhances the lamp’s character and highlights its vintage authenticity.
The stem is a particularly distinctive feature, wrapped in patinated leather that contrasts beautifully with the metallic components. The leather, likely hand-stitched, has aged gracefully with visible texture and tonal variation, introducing a tactile quality that enhances both the visual and physical experience of the piece. This leather-wrapped detail is not only decorative but also indicative of the skilled craftsmanship associated with Swedish lighting design of the era.
The base is circular and proportionally scaled to match the visual weight of the shade, providing stability while maintaining the lamp’s vertical clarity. All components—from the brass fittings to the leather wrapping—are precisely joined, reflecting Boréns’ reputation for quality manufacturing.
Condition is very good vintage. The leather shows signs of natural aging, such as darkening and light surface creases, which contribute to the lamp’s charm. The brass elements display a consistent patina with minor wear, adding depth without detracting from the refined silhouette.
Boréns, based in Sweden, was one of the country’s notable lighting manufacturers in the mid-20th century, known for producing high-quality fixtures often characterized by their combination of metal and organic materials. While the designer of this piece remains unidentified, the construction and detailing suggest the hand of a skilled artisan working within the Scandinavian modern tradition.
