Description
Many museums, churches and headquarters of large companies house the work of Scandinavian Modern lighting designer Carl Fagerlund. Initially an instructor of illustration, Fagerlund shifted into the world of lighting design during the 1940s with the advantage of having an artist’s eye, and today his vintage table lamps, chandeliers, wall lights and other fixtures enrich dwellings and continue to captivate collectors all over the world.
This wall lamp emerges as the epitome of elegance and innovation. The lamp clearly shows the craftsmanship of the maker, with beautiful geometric forms and symmetry dominating the structure. Recalling elements of the Art Deco movement, this model combines a brass structure with a characteristic textured glass shade. The popularity of brass in the 1950s and 60s can be attributed to its golden hue that adds warmth to the style's modern aesthetic. This wall lamp further emulates the mid-century modern movement's guiding principles through its clean lines and geometric shapes. As the light sources are placed near the middle of the shades, when lit the glass showcases its golden colour with an ombre effect. Whether turned on or off, the shade provides great contrast to the brass structure. This lamp stands as a testament to Fagerlund’s mastery in the realm of glass artistry.
Fagerlund is best known for the work he did at Orrefors Glassworks, a legendary glassworks in Småland, Sweden which garnered worldwide acclaim for its wares after introducing a range of decorative objects and art glass at the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in 1925. Fagerlund joined Orrefors in 1946, and designed richly intricate and provocative sconces and other wall fixtures of brass and textured glass elements; this wall lamp is a prime example of this acclaimed work.
