Description
A poetic object designed with purpose, the ‘Flora’ by Carlo Nason merges two functions into one refined gesture. Produced by Linea GB in the 1970s, this hybrid piece functions both as a lamp and a vase. The design is documented on page 176 of the Carlo Nason monograph Handle With Care, affirming its position within the designer’s innovative body of work.
Design
The shape consists of a handblown Murano glass sphere divided into three distinct horizontal sections. The central band is composed of opaque white glass, while the top and bottom are formed in grey smoked glass. The lamp is illuminated from within, and the milky glass diffuses the light softly, creating a gentle ambient glow. Above, the opening allows for use as a vase, permitting the user to place a flower or branch without interrupting the light's function. This duality is handled with clarity and simplicity, key traits in Nason’s output during this period. The glass thickness and symmetry give the object a balanced presence, and the internal wiring is cleverly concealed so as not to interfere with the overall form.
Both in use and in rest, the ‘Flora’ reveals Nason’s interest in the intersection of sculpture and function. The object maintains a quiet presence, yet its design communicates clarity of intent.
Condition
The piece remains in very good condition. Light signs of wear are consistent with age and use, and the electrical components have been checked and are in working order. -
