Description
This rare pair of sculptural table lamps was designed and produced by the French wood artist Claude Chauvy in his workshop in Saint-Sulpice-de-Favières, France, during the 1950s. Both lamps are signed "C. CHAUVY" to the underside of the base.
Turned from solid African mahogany, the lamps are executed in one of Claude Chauvy's most distinctive sculptural forms. The twisting profile reveals different aspects of the wood grain from every angle, reflecting the artist's enduring interest in the relationship between form and material.
The lamps are in good condition, with updated 220V wiring and new shades.
Claude Chauvy's work was featured in the October 1956 issue of Meubles et Décors, which documented his workshop in Saint-Sulpice-de-Favières and illustrated closely related sculptural forms. The article noted Chauvy's preference for selecting woods according to their individual qualities and grain rather than their rarity, an approach that is clearly reflected in the present lamps. Chauvy was later the subject of the documentary Claude Chauvy, L'Art du Tournage en Bois by Jean-Pierre Bonneau, presented at the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs of the 1977 Cannes Film Festival.
