Description
Designed for the ambitious seaside development of Port-Leucate in southern France, these Bornes Lumineuses Portuairereflect the architectural vision of Georges Candilis (1913–1995), one of the most influential figures in post-war European architecture. A former collaborator of Le Corbusier and later a founding member of Team 10, Candilis played a pivotal role in redefining modernism through a more human-centered approach to urban planning. His work sought to create environments in which architecture, infrastructure, and daily life formed a coherent whole, a philosophy that found one of its most complete expressions in the development of Port-Leucate during the late 1960s and early 1970s. The distinctive silhouette of these luminaires is believed to draw inspiration from Les Chevaliers Cathares (The Cathar Knights), the monumental sculptural work by Jacques Tissinier, whose stylized vertical forms became a symbolic reference within the cultural landscape of the Languedoc region.
Created circa 1970, these illuminated bollards demonstrate Candilis’ conviction that even the most functional elements of the public realm should contribute to the architectural identity of a place. Rather than treating lighting as a purely technical necessity, he integrated it into the broader visual language of the marina, where buildings, walkways, street furniture, and infrastructure were conceived as parts of a unified urban composition. As surviving elements from this landmark coastal project, the luminaires offer a rare insight into Candilis’ multidisciplinary approach, where architecture, planning, design, and regional identity converged in a distinctly Mediterranean vision of modern living. 20 in stock, sold individually.
