Description
This exquisite and large Art Nouveau / Jugendstil brass chandelier exemplifies the elegance of Viennese Modernism. Designed by architect Hugo Gorge in the 1930s and manufactured in the 1940s, it stands out for its exceptional scale. With a diameter of 48", this is the largest version of this model we have encountered, likely a custom-made, one-of-a-kind piece.
We also have matching wall sconces available (see listing LU1015240597212).
Crafted with outstanding quality, the chandelier features a sculptural, gracefully curved brass frame suspended by woven cords, accommodating eight light sources with elegant conical lampshades. It also presents beautifully when displayed without shades.
The chandelier is in very good original condition, showcasing a desirable patina on the brass hardware that has developed beautifully over time. It retains its original wiring and charming white porcelain sockets. The current total drop height is 59". Please see below for rewiring and drop height adjustment options.
The lampshades have been carefully refurbished in off-white beige silk fabric, preserving their original proportions.
Wiring / Rewiring:
The chandelier can be delivered in its original condition with white porcelain sockets. The wiring has been checked and is fully functional, compatible with both E26 (US) and E27 (EU) bulbs. In this case, the drop height can be shortened from 59" to approximately 52" if desired.
Alternatively, we offer a complete rewiring service, replacing the wiring and upgrading to modern UL-listed sockets. This option also allows for greater flexibility in adjusting the drop height to your specifications. This service is complimentary and typically takes 4–6 weeks.
Hugo Gorge (1883–1934) was an Austrian architect associated with Josef Frank and Oskar Strnad. He studied in Troppau, Brno, at the Vienna University of Technology, and the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna under Friedrich Ohmann. Gorge worked with Ohmann and later assisted Strnad at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts. He became a civil architect in 1933 and designed interiors as well as residential and commercial buildings in Vienna. In 1932, he contributed a double house to the Werkbundsiedlung Vienna. His style emphasized simple ornamentation, making him an early modernist in Vienna alongside Adolf Loos and Josef Frank. -
