Description
Inger Persson, a renowned Swedish ceramicist, began working for Rörstrand in 1959 at just 22 years of age. She then became a leading designer for the company, during a time when Swedish design was embracing both modernism and expressive craftsmanship. Much of her works feature a minimalist and functional form, with decorative details and high-quality materials, as these stoneware floor lamps exemplify.
This pair showcases the unique approach to lighting design that defined much of the decade’s Scandinavian aesthetic. Each lamp features a tall, cylindrical base crafted from richly glazed stoneware, with subtle artistic variations that give them a dynamic presence. The stoneware bodies are bold yet balanced, segmented in a way that creates rhythmic verticality that complements the overall form. The lamps are topped with beige fabric shades, which are proportionally sizeable and ultimately serve to highlight, rather than compete, with the ceramic bodies. Thanks to this combination of materials, light plays off the glaze when the lamps are switched on, further enriching the visual interest. With a combination of interesting material choices and design, this pair has an innovative, modern look that is just as much a work of art as it is utilitarian. Inger Persson managed to make these lamps anything but typical, showcasing both craftsmanship and design skill.
Rörstrand is one of the oldest and most renowned ceramic and porcelain manufacturers in Europe, and has a legacy spanning over 250 years. In the middle of the 20th century, Inger Persson created a wide range of stoneware pieces at Rörstrand - from lamps to teapots - which have become highly sought after by collectors today. Her works tread a fine line between art and design; they are not just functional objects but a piece of decor that encapsulates the organic aesthetic of Swedish mid-20th century design.
