Rare "Parachute" prototype lamps by Marc Lepage for Knoll

An exceptionally rare pair of prototype "Parachute" floor lamps designed by Marc Lepage for Knoll, circa 1972. Conceived at the intersection of lighting, sculpture, and kinetic design, each lamp features a polished chrome-plated steel base housing an integrated fan that gently inflates a translucent nylon "parachute" sleeve. Illuminated from within by four internal bulbs, the fabric transforms into a softly glowing architectural form that appears to float effortlessly above its base.
Lepage described his creations as "soft, sensitive machines—to be touched," reflecting his fascination with interactive objects that blur the boundaries between industrial design and art. The smaller lamps were produced only in extremely limited numbers and the larger version never went into production. the Parachute lamp remains one of the most elusive and innovative lighting designs associated with Knoll during the experimental design movement of the early 1970s.
This remarkable prototype pair is presented in excellent condition, retaining its original chrome-plated steel bases and nylon shades. Provenance includes the personal collection of a former Chief Executive Officer of Knoll, adding an exceptional layer of historical significance and desirability for the discerning collector.
