Description
The design movement of the Mid-Century is known for many “firsts” and lighting is no exception. It was then when tradition was questioned and new forms were experimented with. Historically, a piece of lighting was a lamp plus shade combination, the great designer Bill Curry challenged this notion.
Curry is often credited with inventing “total” lighting designs in which the two-part lamp became one singular sculpture. While the relationship of lighting and sculpture is commonplace today, it was revolutionary in Curry’s day. His own company titled “Design Line” offered a slew of playful lighting pieces and modular design but most familiar; his “Mushroom” motif. The majority of his work was rooted in the 60’s however due to it’s popularity the Laurel Lamp Company commissioned Curry to design pieces for their own collection. Most likely from the 70’s we have this design lovechild, iconically Curry with Laurel’s chic aesthetic.
This Mushroom Lamp remains in original condition with wonderful patina on its brass base. Through years of survival the signature frosted blown glass tops are often lost or shattered, this lamp retains its original shade and is in superb condition. A turn switch is cleverly located beneath the flare of its base and is equipped with three-way electrical; perfect for adjusting your lighting to any which mood. -
