Pair of Model "1041" Table Lamps by Luxus, Sweden Mid-20th Century

$ 6,270
  • Description
    Swedish lighting design in the mid-20th century was driven by a commitment to material honesty, sculptural clarity, and a restrained approach to decoration. Manufacturers such as Luxus played a central role in shaping this identity, producing lighting that reflected the broader ideals of Scandinavian modernism. Founded in the early 1950s, Luxus became known for its high-quality craftsmanship and its ability to merge functional design with subtle artistic expression.

    Model “1041” demonstrates how Swedish designers balanced simplicity with a strong sculptural presence, while experimenting with ceramic materials. This pair of table lamps is defined by its bold cylindrical bases and carefully articulated surfaces. Crafted from glazed stoneware, the bodies present a rich, dark finish that enhances their weight and visual presence. The form is divided into two distinct sections: a smooth lower cylinder and a ribbed upper segment composed of evenly spaced horizontal rings. This decorative element introduces both visual rhythm and tactile contrast, giving the lamps a distinctly architectural quality. The the tall, column-like bodies support wide, conical fabric shades. These shades diffuse the light softly, creating a warm ambient glow that contrasts with the darker, more grounded appearance of the base. Despite their apparent simplicity, the lamps carry a slightly brutalist feel, where bold geometric forms and the emphasis on natural materials create a confident presence.

    This balance between softness and structure allows the lamps to function both as lighting elements and as sculptural objects within a space. This pair exemplifies the Swedish modern design philosophy, being both practical and visually compelling.
