Paavo Tynell Model "5762" Floor Lamp for Taito, Finland ca 1940s
-
Description
Paavo Tynell is one of Finland’s best known and collected mid-century designers. He was a pioneer of lighting design and a founder of the first lighting manufacturing company in Finland, Taito Oy. The model “5762” floor lamp is one of Tynell’s most well known pieces and continues to be highly sought after today.
The best qualities of Tynell's light fixtures are their atmospheric glow and disciplined, functionalist design. At the same time, the subtle ornamentation and clever use of materials are always present. Distinctive in several ways, this lamp showcases the versatility that characterised the mid-century era. Surpassing the strict functionality many designers were concerned with, this model is a whimsical representation of Tynell’s innovative experimentation in lamp making . The craftsmanship involved in creating this piece is evident in the seamless construction and attention to detail. The brass base provides stability, while still maintaining the overall aesthetic, while the lampshade is in an off-white fabric with a brass “crown” on top. The brass cap and base are simple, yet important design elements that give this floor lamp its modern look. The sheen of the cap contrasts beautifully against the organic look of the fabric. With its minimalist elegance, it not only serves as a functional source of light but also as a sculptural element in a room, embodying the Nordic design principles of form, function, and beauty. Finnish designers like Paavo Tynell pushed the boundaries of lighting, combining materials and manufacturing techniques to create standout pieces. At the same time, the strong emphasis on simplicity and functionality resulted in both beautiful and practical objects, testaments of Tynell’s legacy - this lamp is the perfect example, iconic through its distinctive design.
Overall, the composition of the shapes and clever ornamental elements give this lamp a personality that isn’t loud but still stands out. By the end of the 1940s, Finland’s international reputation for great design was established, thanks in no small part to the work of Paavo Tynell.
