Description
A pair of adjustable ceiling lamps, Model A1965, designed by Paavo Tynell and manufactured by Taito Oy in Finland during the 1950s. The lamps feature a counterweight mechanism, allowing the height to be adjusted—a testament to Tynell’s ingenuity as a lighting designer. Their versatile design makes them suitable for rooms with varying ceiling heights, ideal for areas requiring focused downlight, such as kitchen counters or dining tables. Repainted in a soft pastel pink, the pair remains in very good condition.
Paavo Tynell (1890–1973) was a Finnish designer celebrated worldwide for his exceptional lighting fixtures. Often referred to as the man who "illuminated Finland," his work graces prominent spaces such as the Finnish Parliament House and the United Nations Secretary-General’s office in New York.
Beginning as a sheet metal apprentice in 1906, Tynell later studied at Helsinki’s Central School of Applied Arts before co-founding Taito Oy in 1918. Initially producing diverse metalwork, the company shifted focus to lighting as electrification spread across Finland. By the 1930s, households embraced light fixtures, though Taito’s early success stemmed from public commissions like Alvar Aalto’s Paimio Sanatorium.
Post-World War II, Tynell achieved international acclaim, tailoring his designs for the U.S. market through Finland House in New York. Despite initial criticism in Finland, his 1940s–1950s style became a bestseller, cementing his legacy. Today, his works command high prices at auction, reflecting their enduring desirability. While thousands of his commissioned pieces exist, many records have been lost over time.
