Description
Large pair of antique Rococo style floral porcelain mirrors by Meissen
German, Late 19th Century
Height 136cm, width 90cm, depth 17/ 20cm
This exceptional pair of mirrors, crafted by master German artisans, exemplifies the ornate elegance of the Rococo style while showcasing the celebrated artistry of the Meissen manufactory. Created in the late 19th century, these pieces draw inspiration from the 18th century designs that first defined this highly decorative style.
Each mirror features a closely matched design, with rocaille-shaped white porcelain frames topped with gracefully arched crowns. The frames are parcel-gilt and elaborately adorned with colourful, encrusted motifs, including soft pink and turquoise foliage, richly painted flowers, and lush green leaves. Yellow canary birds and delicately modelled, semi-nude cherubs embellish the corners and sides, while a vibrant bouquet of porcelain flowers crowns the top, adding depth and visual richness. The finely crafted three-dimensional details create a striking sense of movement and life, highlighting the extraordinary skill of the artisans.
Practical as well as decorative, the lower sections of the frames feature candleholders on either side, allowing the mirrors to illuminate the surrounding space. Adding further distinction, each piece bears a coat of arms in a cartouche at the base of the frame.
With their impressive scale, intricate decoration, and superb craftsmanship, this pair of antique Meissen mirrors makes a stunning statement in both traditional and contemporary interiors.
