Exceptional Danish Cabinetmaker Barrel Back Armchair in Floral Damask, 1920s

This exceptional wingback chair was designed and produced by a master cabinetmaker in Denmark in the 1920s. Its design offers an intriguing combination of the antique English barrel back style, fused with organic, seashell-inspired shapes and the more streamlined lines characteristic of the early 20th-century Danish design movement.

The striking form is defined by the curved barrel back, which creates an embracing, cocooning effect. Interior piping forms a vertical tufting motif throughout, accentuating the shape of the back and the dynamic line of the outward-curving sides. The generously sized armrests extend into circular scrolls. The chair features a loose, down-filled seat cushion. Its beautiful rounded, tub-shaped back makes it visually appealing from all angles, ideal for central placement in a room. The generous proportions and high, embracing back also contribute to its comfort.

The chair retains its original floral damask upholstery and stands on four solid, stained birch wood legs.

This piece is in completely original condition. The original fabric has been preserved relatively well but is showing signs of wear consistent with age and use. We recommend reupholstery. The legs are in good condition with minor marks.
