Description
This Bridge sofa, designed by Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret for the Chandigarh project in the 1950s, reflects a synthesis of architectural clarity and sculptural expression. Conceived within the broader vision of modernist urban planning, the piece demonstrates a dynamic interplay of volumes and structural elements, revealing different spatial qualities as light interacts with its surfaces. Its form is both rigorous and expressive, embodying the functional ideals and aesthetic refinement central to the Chandigarh furniture program.
The structure is executed in solid Indian teak, all original, with a rich cognac patina enhanced by multiple layers of traditional shellac, lending depth and a softly irregular gloss. The upholstery has been restored using traditional techniques with internal springs, and finished in high-quality vintage leather, respecting the integrity of the original construction. Seating three people comfortably, the sofa stands as a significant example of mid-century modern design, combining material authenticity with architectural presence. -
