Telephone Bench with Integrated Two-Drawer Cabinet and Shearling Cushion

$ 6,500
  • Description
    An exceptional example of Brazilian Modern craftsmanship, this sculptural telephone bench from the 1960s transforms an everyday domestic object into a refined architectural statement. Originally conceived as a telephone seat, its timeless proportions and multifunctional design translate effortlessly into today's interiors as an elegant accent bench, entryway piece, bedroom seat, dressing room companion, or hallway focal point.

    Crafted entirely from beautifully aged solid rosewood, the piece showcases a striking patchwork composition of richly figured boards, celebrating the dramatic natural variation of the timber. Deep chocolate, cinnamon, and reddish-brown tones intermingle with expressive cathedral grain and swirling movement, creating a composition that is both organic and highly graphic. Unlike many period examples, the cabinetry is fully finished on every side—including the back—allowing the bench to float beautifully within a room rather than requiring placement against a wall.

    The integrated cabinet features two generously sized drawers fitted with sculptural solid wood pulls, providing discreet storage while preserving the clean architectural silhouette. The opposite side is formed by an elegant slatted bench seat, a hallmark of Brazilian Modern design, offering both visual lightness and practical durability.

    Completing the piece is a custom-fitted removable shearling cushion in a warm natural ivory tone. The dense, finely curled wool introduces softness and tactile richness while complementing the warmth of the rosewood. Designed with a subtle central tuft, the cushion sits neatly within the wooden frame, balancing comfort with refined restraint.

    Supported by four solid square legs connected by stretchers for structural integrity, the bench possesses a quiet monumentality despite its compact scale. Every angle has been thoughtfully resolved, making it equally compelling viewed from the front, side, or rear.

    Elegant, practical, and beautifully crafted, this rare Brazilian Modern bench embodies the era's masterful union of sculptural form, honest materials, and everyday functionality. A versatile collector's piece that feels as relevant today as it did over half a century ago.
