French 19th Century Carpenter’s Workbench

This French 19th century workbench is a fascinating relic of technology predating the assembly line; a hybrid of the artisanal process and industrial innovations. The top planks exhibit amazing textures by the repetition of saw blades and hand tools necessary to the carpenter’s craft, which includes one removable “dog” on the left side and a hole to the right where the holdfast iron rod would have been inserted. Four roughly hewn legs mounted by forged iron brackets support the top and a trough-like lower shelf–a potentially useful feature should one want to repurpose this piece as a console table for an entryway. It appears a vise grip would have been installed on the front left leg that has since been removed. The awe-inspiring workbench appeals to a wide range of design tastes, from brutalism to industrial to primitive for its charming imperfections. Cleaned and polished with a French paste wax, ready for your interior. We believe this to be in good antique condition considering its age, and any visible signs of wear are captured in the photos.
