Carl Auböck

Austrian, 1900 - 1957

The history of Werkstätte Carl Auböck began in the 19th century in Vienna, Austria, when Karl Heinrich Auböck I established a metal workshop specializing in collectible Wiener Bronzen, small bronze figurines that became iconic decorative objects across Austrian social classes. In 1926, his son Carl Auböck II inherited the workshop and infused the family craft with modernist ideals from the Weimar Bauhaus, transforming traditional bronze statuettes into a new vision of sculptural yet functional objects for modern living. Under his leadership, the workshop began experimenting boldly with materials—leather, horn, cane, wood and polished bronze—and produced playful, clever objets d’art like oversized paperweights, corkscrews, clocks, and ashtrays that blurred the line between whimsy and utility.

From the 1940s into the 1950s, father and son—Carl Auböck II and Carl Auböck III—collaborated closely, combining Austrian craftsmanship with American modernism. Auböck III, who studied at MIT and worked alongside design luminaries such as Walter Gropius, Charles and Ray Eames, propelled the workshop onto the international stage. Together they expanded production into furniture, lighting, accessories and cutlery, earning multiple awards at design fairs like the Milan Triennale and establishing Auböck’s reputation with brands including Hermès, Tiffany & Co., Pierre Cardin, Saks and Neiman Marcus.

Today, Werkstätte Carl Auböck is run by Carl Auböck IV (born 1954) and his sister Maria in their original 7th‑District Viennese townhouse on Bernardgasse. Now in its fourth generation, the workshop continues to handcraft around 450 signature designs—drawn from a catalog of more than 4,500—maintaining its celebrated blend of material innovation, Old World artisanal quality and modernist wit. From functional brass accessories to limited-edition home objects, Auböck’s creations remain coveted by collectors and design enthusiasts worldwide, standing as a timeless fusion of Viennese heritage and modern design vision.
